As nice sunny days are approaching, now is the time I preach about wearing sunscreen. My friends and family can attest to how passionate I am about this topic!
After working for Clinique for 2+ years I have seen so many cases of sun damage it is CRAZY! People have told me they would like to reverse signs of aging or discoloration. However, they don't want to commit to using products that will reverse the signs because they would much rather look tan than use sunscreen.
Let me explain to you exactly what sun damage is and how it can affect you.
Sun damage happens when there is long exposure to sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. This exposure makes your skin over produce Melanin (Melanin gives your skin its pigment) also known as Hyperpigmentation. These flat, brownish patches appear on areas of the body most often exposed to the sun - especially the face, hands, and arms. So, let’s say you were to tan without sunscreen, (yikes!) I bet you would start to notice more freckles that could later turn into sun spots. Just one spot left untreated could continue to produce Melanin which would make that spot larger and larger over time. In some cases sun spots are benign but they are usually unsightly and are often followed by other types of sun damage, such as dry or rough skin and wrinkles. Those things alone are enough to make me want to wear sunscreen. Who wants to look 40 in their 20’s?!
In some cases, sun spots advance into different types of skin cancer. Like the article below states, “skin cancer rates are on the rise and sunscreen has been proven to decrease the development of skin cancer.”
